Media about Ankylosing Spondylitis

Ankylosing spondylitis (AS) is a crippling form of arthritis that generally strikes young people in their teens and twenties, sometimes even earlier. Left untreated, it causes pain, disability and can eventually cause the spinal vertebrae to fuse together forming one brittle bone, often in a stooped over position. Visit http://www.BackPainTest.org to fill out a brief survey that will assess their symptoms and recommend next steps.

April is Ankylosing Spondulitis Awareness Month! There is so much information online about what AS is, I think anyone who knows of anyone that has AS, should inform themselves, so they can understand what their friend or family member is going through. This is my contribution to help even just one person to want to look deeper into a painful disease some way, some how. God Bless Us All !   created by Cynthia

First symptoms of ankylosing spondylitis appear at the sacro-iliac-joint. The tendon insert as well as the capsules of the facet joints are affected. The ligaments calcify which can lead to new bone formation between adjacent vertebrae. This causes the spine to fuse in a fixed position, sometimes creating a forward-stooped posture if treatment is not in time.

Rheumatism can affect all joints within the body, triggered by the own immune system. Inflammation is elicited above all by a messenger substance — the so called TNF alpha. It attracts aggressive phagocytes into the joint space and activates them. The phagocytes — which are rather meant to eliminate pathogenic germs, now attack the cartilage layer and later also the bone.

To stop this process, antibodies are injected. They bind the TNF alpha and neutralize it. Thus the messenger substance is blocked, the phagocytes are no longer activated and the inflammation within the joints can resolve
